The Calypso bulbosa (Calypso orchid), also known as the fairy slipper or Venus’s slipper is the only species currently classified in the genus Calypso. This species is widely distributed and can be found around the undisturbed northern and montane forest of America to Japan.

Calypso bulbosa are small plants of approximately around 10 -14 cm tall. The colour forms are variable which range from pink to red sometimes with darker purple spottings, and yellow beard. It does not transplant well owing to its mycorrhizal dependence on specific soil fungi where it strives. This orchid is not suitable for normal tropical cultivation.
