The Amorphallus is current displayed at the Green Pavillion near the main entrance of the Singapore Botanic Gardens. as to date 18th Nov 2010, one can see the spadix is fully grown and a portion is visible and within the next 2 days the flower should be able to open fully.

The gigantic Amorphophallus grows in the wild only in parts of Sumatra, Indonesia. It was first scientifically described in 1878 by Italian botanist Odoardo Beccari. The plant flowers only infrequently in the wild and even more rarely when cultivated. The displayed titan arum ‘s inflorescence is about 2 metres and some are know to reach over 3 metres. The plant is reputed to emit a pungent fragrance (aka rotting meat).

Posted in 2010, News from Indonesia with tags , on April 7, 2010 by orchideae

Destario Metusala discovered a new orchid species from the dendrobium ‘s calcarifera section in Kalimantan. This dendrobium greatly resemble Dendrobium panduriferum. The major difference is that Dendrobium labellum have U-shaped callus in between side lobe and the edge of middle lobe is jaggy.

HortPark has lined up a series of event to celebrate the coming of the Chinese New Year on the 17th Jan 2009. Activities include the Butterfly Garden Tour, The Eight Treasures Hunt, A Festive Bazar of Happiness, Gardening Talk: Airplants and God of Fortune Meet & Greet.

Photobucket

Due to a lack of time, I was not able to enjoy the full range of activities organised by HortPark.

I was there at around 11am to 1.30pm. The response to the bazar seem to be lukewarm small crowd of people were seen gathering around their favourite stalls. Seven vendors were peddling their wares at the bazar, some interesting flora and good beginner stuffs were spotted.
